Upload photo size

Claimsman Posted 1172 Days, 19 Hrs ago
What size is recommended for uploading photos to the member photostream?
Cyrus khamak Posted 1172 Days, 16 Hrs ago

Hello David,

In short, the recommended upload, for now is 1024. Any images biger than 800 pixels, will have an Xlarge size which will be viewed in full screen.

Now, the long explanations ::

when I designed the uploader, I set the limit to 15 MB, but this is the bigger picture:::
1_On this site we are going to put a lot of emphasis on image display and quality. As you know, each time you downsize an image,
You lose some contrast and sharpness. the bigger the downsize, the bigger the loss(I know my good friend, Stephen, Claypaws will disagree with me for the way I am explainig this, but I think this is easier to follow) Sites usually sharpen images when they downsize. Also, as you know, there is no one formula for sharpening all images. different images need different sharpening settings. so, keep that in mind and also this fact::
All those image download prevention offered here and some other sites, are truly nonsense. They will ONLY keep grandma and grandpa from downloading them for personal pleasure. most everyone knows how to take a screen shot and many can go in the "Source code" of a page and get the direct URL to to the image and download. Besides, more motivated people, can easily access the server location for images and download all or any they like. there are even applications for this.

So,,,
This is what I have temporarily decided to do . We recommend uploading of 1024 pixels images and processed the way you like.
We will show that Full screen, untouched, in Xlarge option. For the rest of the smaller sizes, we sharpen as we downsize.
(thank you Stephen for woding this formula out with me) NOW,, if you upload an image lets say, 4000 pixels, we will downsize and keep an original of 1024, untouched and discard the 4000 pixels. A LITTLE LATER,, WE WILL ONLY KEEP THE ORIGINAL OF THE IMAGES WHICH ARE MARK FOR "PRINT AVAILABLE" and we keep the original in a special secured location, ONLY accessible by the printers.
Printers and the print facilities and employees, are also known to sometimes, breach the copyright policies and take advantage of the files available to them. SO, for this and other purposes, we have also created the "Home Store". Here, members can sell anything, including prints and gifts which they themselves make and available.
SO, for now, I would recommend uploading 1024, and processed as you wish.

Morad Posted 1082 Days, 22 Hrs ago
Can automatic image sharpening be disabled? Thanks

Cyrus khamak Posted 1082 Days, 21 Hrs ago
Hello Morad,
Here's how it goes::
We need to sharpen each time we downsize, as you know. Sometimes, some friends like you, prefer the original, unsharpened version. So, this is what we came up with::
if you upload an image larger than 800 pixels, such as 801 pixels or 1024, the original version will not be sharpened and will be kept as Xlarge and will be viewed full screen. All other versions will be sharpened. If you upload an image larger than 500 pixels, but smaller than 800 pixels, the original version would be viewed as Large size. All other smaller sizes will be sharpened. And, if you upload an image 500 pixels or smaller, the original version will be viewd as medium and all smaller versions will be sharpened. SO, YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE ORIGINAL UPLOADED SIZE UNSHARPENED.
So, do you think this is a good compromise ?

Morad Posted 1082 Days, 12 Hrs ago
Hello Cyrus,
This is one of those difficult situations in the world of digital photography! How much to sharpen is the problem. Now with your explanation I know what to do. One thing I noticed is that compression ratio for JPG files changes after upload and photos get compressed more!
What is a acceptable file size for 850x567 image?
Thanks

Cyrus khamak Posted 1082 Days, 8 Hrs ago
Hello Morad,
Yes, it IS a sticky subject and one that you will never get a one-size-fit-all answer to. However, after many days of going back and forth, we came up with the present scenario.

""""One thing I noticed is that compression ratio for JPG files changes after upload and photos get compressed more!"""""

This is strange to hear Morad and you are not the first one who mentioned this. There Was another friend in one other forum who said said the same thing about images being compressed noticeably. Could you please show me a photo that you think has been compressed noticeably ? I mean this in a good way, sa we like to make things as good as possible for the site and for our friends and members. This is how the compression works on the site::

1_we always have the original file stored on our sercers, just thw way you have uploaded them.
2_for the large and extra large and the medium sizes, we compress ONLY 5%. After experimenting with many images with different content, we came up with this compression number and it only supposed to compress the data you would only see in a print. Actually in some images with less detail and contrast, you can even compress much more and see NO change on screen.
This 5% compresses is done for the following reasons:
We have explore and we have the contsts and we do show the large sizes in both sections. Now, some of these files, could reach one Megabyte in size and you can imagine what kind of a load it would put on the servers, when many are playing the contests and the Explore. ALSO, remember, not everyone has cable and high speed access to the internet and they could suffer a lot waiting for these heavy images to upload, while they may not even see the extra detail in a fully uncompressed image. Any thoughts on this ?

We compress the thumbnails more for the same reason above and the for the follwoing reason also::
As you can see, we show lots of thumbnails on the site, on each and every page. ALSO, on your photostream and on your gallery, we show 100 thumbnail per page, versus 20-30 per page shown on all other sites. This is also a good thing, I suppose, as it makes it much easier to navigate and go through someone's 1000 photos flipping pages only 10 times. NOW, all sotes compress thumbnail and we do not compress any more than cometitive sites and this is mainly for making the page to upload in an acceptable time. Any thoughts on this issue?

""""What is a acceptable file size for 850x567 image?""""
Morad this is a very tough question to answer. As you know, images vary in file size, due to content, color information, detail and contrast. I can show you same size images with a BIG difference in file size. Do this experiment::
Open a file in Photoshop and sharpen it. Now save it and check the file size. You will see that the file size has increased.

I will apprecite ALL feedbacks in respect to image display image handeling. We would like to make this site, your very favorite site and all feedbacks are encouraged. So, please, show me any images that you think has suffered quality loss after upload.
To post the image here, please do the following::
1_go to yourphoto photo page and put your mouse over your photo.
2_you will see the "options" button on the top left of the photo, click on that
3_from the drop down list, choose "image size"
4_on the new pop up, choose "Medium size and them copy the HTMl code (top box) and paste it here.
Thanks

Morad Posted 1082 Days, 1 Hrs ago
Hi Cyrus,
I did not mean to cause more head aches for you specially about compression. All I notice was my original upload had 1:5 compression ratio and after the upload changed to 1:7 which is negligible but if my image size is 800 or less pixels then combination of auto sharpening plus extra compression would cause a bit of image degradation! know that I am getting a little more familiar with your site I do not think it is going to be an issue.
If I see abnormal image quality I'd bring it to your attention.
Thanks

Cyrus khamak Posted 1081 Days, 21 Hrs ago
No Morad, you are NOT creating extra headache, you are helping us improve the site and that is my goal. I am ready and willing to listen to idea which would be an improvement.
By the way::
i1_if you want to stick to max size of 800 pixels, upload 801 instead and this way:: A_you have an Xlarge size Full screen, B_ you will have the 801 size untouched.

2_remember, the original size you upload does not get sharpened and will remain intact. If you see otherwise, please let me know to correct, as it is not supposed to be otherwise.
Thanks

PS We do NOT wish to sacrifice ANY image quality here So, please us know if you see any image reduced in quality and that would be greatly appreciated.

Morad Posted 1081 Days ago
Hello Cyrus,
I noticed now that even for 850 pixels images when you look at them at extra large I see some image quality degradation, it mainly shows on images with black or darker background. It seems image density changes (lighter) or noisier(hard to say for now)!
Thanks,
Morad

Cyrus khamak Posted 1080 Days, 22 Hrs ago
Thanks morad,
I need a photo URL please, to compare it the original
ALSO, remember, in full screen, because there is no light pollution, you may notice image imperfections more.
Thanks
Cyrus

Morad Posted 1079 Days, 23 Hrs ago
Hi Cyrus,
Here is the medium size URL of the image.
http://megashot.net/sbushinskii/mvc/photo_500/20100602173129_95818.jpg
Also here is another URL of the same image but from a different website for you to compare. I hope I am not offending you by supplying the second URL.

Thanks,
Morad

Cyrus khamak Posted 1078 Days, 2 Hrs ago
Hello Morad,

NO, I am NOT offended at all, as I am looking to improve the site and make it better and better for you and other friends and members.

Unfortunately, as I see it, the file on Megashot is a much better file with more detail and contrast. The reason for this, is the heavy compression on the other side. The file on Megashot, at 500X 361 pixels is 84 K and the one on the other site at 400X 288 is 18 K. Considering the size difference, the file on megashot has about 3 times more data than the file on the other site. The only issue I see with the file on Megashot, is the small halo in the horizone, which is the result of the sharpening. I will have the developers to reduce the sharpening on the future uploads. Please replace your file probably tomorrow and you should see the halo gone.

Again,
Thank you and you have made this site better, already !

The file on Mega::

The file on the other site::

Morad Posted 1079 Days, 19 Hrs ago
Okay Cyrus, I don't know what happened with the other site image but when I check the image it shows up as 850x613. Any ways thanks for your effort and quick response.

Cyrus khamak Posted 1079 Days, 17 Hrs ago
Morad,
The images are being redone as we speak, thanks

ALSO, ALL THESE FREE SITES HEAVILY COMPRESS PHOTOS, INCLUDING SITES LIKE FACEBOOK. THIS IS WHY I DO NOT UPLOAD TO FACEBOOK ANYMORE. THEY HAVE TO COMPRESS, AS COST OF STORAGE AND BANDWIDTH IS TOO HIGH TO MAINTAIN THE SITE.
Thanks man !

Morad Posted 1079 Days ago
Hi Cyrus,
I must say the new modifications to image quality are working nicely-:)
well done.

Cyrus khamak Posted 1078 Days, 2 Hrs ago
Hello Morad,
Thanks, yes, that tiny halo is gone now and I thank you for the report.

I guess I am a dummy, but most of the discussion here has simply confused me. Should I be downloading picturesat 72mp or 300mp? Should I download images for WEB display, or normally at 300mp? I have noticed that many of my shots are undersaturated when they appear at MegaShot.... so what happens is that I now over-saturate some shots in order to have them appear on MegaShot as they appear to me in my Photoshop program.

As to the matter of contests and Explore, I remain in the dark and am terribly confused. Often I cannot find a shot in Explore after I have sent it there. As for contests, I rarely have any idea as to whether a contest on the drop-down list is open or closed.... unless I see a notice on Facebook. I would prefer to come here for informtion rather than seeing it on Facebook, as it is here that I am sending my photos.

Maggie Posted 894 Days, 10 Hrs ago
Hi David
There are a lot of things happening with our Megashot, as you have noticiced. Do NOT feel like a dummy. I often have to think before I find things. But logic does prevail.

On Contests: Please join the Smart contests community. When you read the front page there you will find the information you seek in the 'content' scection on the front page. hot link to Smart Contests click here
In the Forums on Contests Help there is an explanation of how the Calendar works. click here for how to see how the calendar works Primarily, on the contests, if I want to find my photos, I go to contests, put in the correct catagory and choose the level the photo is on, then I go to the bottom of the page of this calendar and click on the photo on the left side. This displays all the photos and the points they have accumulated.

All of the Contests catagories run 24/7. Always open. The official catagories are announced in the Smart Contests community content page. The official catagories are the ones with prizes. We hope to have some sponsors for prizes eventually.

Thanks for the feed back. We need to know how we can make this information more easily understood.

As far as uploading size.. As far as I am aware the internet only sees 72 pixels per inch, anything above that is not used... but that is old information. For all I know it has changed now. If you save for web, the files are smaller and load faster, but I use 'save as' so that we may see the EXIF data under the 'info' icon. The higher pixels per inch (ppi) or dots per inch (dpi) I believe are mostly for printing. Some one will surely correct me if this is wrong information. Using Save for Web for your banner and other customizations will let your page load faster.

More to follow on Explore...

Maggie Posted 894 Days, 10 Hrs ago
On Explore we have some good information under the Help section.
Click megashot / help and find the Explore Icon at the top of the page
click each of the headings for information.

The Explore Calendar works in much the same way as does the Contests Calendar. Choose the catagory and look at the daily, weekly or monthly photos by clicking on the days or the photos at the bottom.

Hope this helps. I am not great at explaining.

Cyrus khamak Posted 893 Days, 23 Hrs ago
Dave,

Image format...
to answer your first question, it does not matter what DPI, it will be diluted to 72 DPI once uploaded. JUST MAKE SURE before saving your photo, your photo has the sRGB color space. to make sure, do the following::

Click on Edit in photosjop and on the bottom you will see "Convert to Profile" click on that and choose this color space::

20101206170930_60167.jpg

If you have that color space, your photo should look exactly the same, in the same browser, on ALL sites.
Could you give me a link to a photo you think is faded ?

Contest and Explore...
Do you read our News Letters Dave ?
We send frequent news letters titled "Support" to the email address on file, explaining everything you need to know, including the contests.
AGAIN....
Contests NEVER end ! Contests run 24 hours and 7 days a week, IN ALL 13 PRESENT CATEGORIES.
EACH MONTH WE MAY HAVE ONE OR TWO CONTEST CATEGORIES WITH PRIZES. WE CALL THESE THE OFFICIAL CONTESTS. IF ANIMAL CATEGORY IS THE OFFICIAL CONTEST THIS MONTH FOR INSTANCE, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT IS GOING TO START FRESH THIS MONTH. ALL IT MEANS IS THAT, ANY PHOTO ENTERED IN ANIMAL CATEGORY THIS MONTH, WILL BE IN THE OFFICIAL COMPETITION.
Next month, Animal category may no longer be the Official Contest. this does not mean that Animal Category Contest will stop., it will go on just like it does this month, but it is only for fun and not for prizes, like in the Official Contest.
WE SAY THIS IN EACH AND EVERY NEWS LETTER WE SEND OUT.

If you like to know how the contest calendar works, please read this HEREand HERE

please let us know if these are not clear enough.

Just a little note on the "72dpi" for web matter.

That is and always was a myth. The web does not "see only 72dpi". The dpi value stored in a file is and always was completely irrelevant to what is displayed.

All the web "sees" is pixels. (Actually, the web does not "see" anything. All you see is pixels on a screen). Take a file of, say, 800x600 pixels. Make two versions of that file. In one file, set dpi to 72. In the other version, set dpi to 300 (or any figure you like). Upload them both. They will look identical size in all browsers on all sites. Why? Because they will each take up 800x600 pixels of screen space.

The dpi figure is just an instruction to a desktop printer on how many pixels per inch to print. And it can be overridden in any image editing software.

The historical reason for the 72dpi myth catching on goes back to when we all had small monitors of 800x600 resolution. One of those would have had a screen of about a 14 inch diagonal and about 11 inches wide.

800 pixels across an 11 inch width is about 72 pixels per inch. Well OK, it needs to be 11.1 inches wide but let's not worry about the extra 1/10 inch!

Say you want an image to look about 6 inches by 4 inches when viewed on such a screen. You want to work out how many pixels to size that image to. If you multiply each inches dimension by 72, you get 6x72 for the width and 4x72 for the height. That is, about 432x288 pixels.

In general, to get an image to look a chosen number of inches wide on that old screen, you would multiply the inches by 72 to get pixels.

So the instruction got a bit shortened to: "To work out how many pixels to use to display an image of a chosen size, work it out at 72 pixels per inch".

That then got abbreviated to "For people to see your images on the web at your chosen size, use 72 pixels per inch".

That got further shortened to "The web uses 72 pixels per inch".
And then "The web needs 72dpi".

So it is a myth. The web never needed 72dpi and it it is still irrelevant.

In fact, modern screen displays are denser than 72ppi. A 19 inch monitor (diagonal) has a width of about 15 inches. At 1280x960 resolution, that is a pixels per inch of 1280/15, which is about 85 pixels per inch.

In any case, the dpi figure stored in the file is and always was irrelevant. It does not affect what is displayed on screen, whether on the web or otherwise, and it never did. Photoshop and other image editors put 72 into the dpi figure in "save for web" because so many people swallowed the myth that Adobe would get fed up of people telling them it is "needed" for the web. The path of least resistance is to set it to 72 even though it does not matter. I often set mine to 88467537 just for the sheer silliness of it.

Cyrus khamak Posted 893 Days, 13 Hrs ago
When I was answering Dave, O heard myself saying, where are you Claypaws to go into detail on this and set me free, thank you !! And yes, more thoughtful answer would have probably been, whatever resolution you upload, will dilute or condense to the screen resolution you are using.

Maggie Posted 893 Days, 11 Hrs ago
This is so very well explained. Thank you for the clarification on this dpi.. I have never understood it. Now it makes sense. Thanks for the question and the information, Gentlemen.

Claypaws Posted 884 Days, 15 Hrs ago
I am glad it was helpful. Thank you.

Hi Cyrus. I am still having trouble uploading pics :)

Cyrus khamak Posted 614 Days, 16 Hrs ago
sorry to hear,
what browser do you use and what exactly happen?

Thanks

Cyrus khamak Posted 613 Days, 10 Hrs ago
Nautilus Blue Said::

Sorry to take so long to get back to you Cyrus. I use Fire fox. I go to browse window and hit the group. Ie "Landscape" or whatever group applies and then hit upload and nothing happens. Images are less than 2mg and are jpeg Regards NB :))

Cyrus khamak Posted 613 Days, 9 Hrs ago
It seems like you are trying to upload to a community (group) ??
if this is the case, this is how you do it:
On your photo display page, put your mouse over the photo and click on the "options" button on the top left of the photo. on the drop down., you will see several options and chose "Send to a community"
hope that is what you were trying to do.

Cyrus khamak Posted 478 Days, 7 Hrs ago
Lucas,
We do not store the original uploaded sizes if it is larger that 1024 pixels. This is part of our policies and we have discussed this since long time ago.
We will however store the original size once we have eCommerce.
