Boy Cyrus, we've gone around and around with this one. It really hit home when we had many, many photos taken on Photo.net. I personally had over 20 taken and sold from a Chinese market. Even though the site was taken down, they still had our images.
After that, I tried to place my watermark in harmony with the photo making it part of the photo. My current stance is to not download my best photos, sometimes I post photos that become very popular even though I don't consider them terrific.
Knowing what's possible, I've kind of given up on the protection front. However, you make a great point with your first link - those that are most likely to do this don't have the editing skills to pull it off. They are just plain lazy! If they have the financial resources to purchase the applications needed, they have the money to purchase quality cameras.
Thanks Cyrus for keeping this in the forefront but, even in the best scenario, getting restitution is slim to none.
Dave
If anyone would like to see first hand what can happen to an image, here is one of mine that's been hijacked and is being used across platforms.
