Broken photo uploader 2007/06/23 01:57
I loaded a photo and went about the site looking at photos and things. I went back to upload another photo and I cannot get it to work. It gives me a nice little error box on a white page saying 0 files were successfully uploaded. and an ok box to check. So I checked the OK box, force of habit, since it is not really ok. Wonder what I did wrong to break my loader.

I guess you are referring to the gallery and not the forum image upload. I'll check this out.
Thanks.

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/23 13:47
Gallery/Upload file/ browse/ open the photo from my computer Megashot folder/continue/ then I get the same message about 0 upload successful. I then have to hit the ok button to get back to the site. There are no choices but to hit the ok button. opps forgot to look at what the 'source' was saying, but I don't think I would have understood the problem anyway.

same error just came up for me.
I finally realized that my file was 655KB, over the limit. a specific message for that error might be helpful...
unfortunately, I have a lot of files that are just over the limit.

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/25 18:29
yes, I eventually figured out that size matters too.

I have been downsizing to make mine work on here now. I wonder if it would be possible to have the system downsize them? Within reasonable parameters, anyway. As you said Doug, most of yours are just a bit oversized. I wonder if the system downsizing would cause compression degradation of the photo, though?

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/25 18:41
The downsizing algorithms included in Photoshop is superior to the image manipulation library used by the site (http://www.boutell.com/gd/).

The reason why the maximum upload size and dimension have been so strictly limited is that the server on which the site resides on can not handle the work load.

If we raise the limit, the risk of crashes and timeouts will increase dramatically.

I ask for you patience. Hopefully, when the site in finished, we will be able to afford a decent hosting solution, which will suit our needs better.

yes, I understand.
hosting limitations are one reason I mentioned to Cyrus the approach taken by utata.org --> separate site, but the images are hosted on flickr. he mentioned that you all find that approach too limiting. cheers.

I think utata is a great site (from a programmers point of view) and during our initial discussions about the platform, I mentioned the possibility of doing such a thing. Coding with Flickr API is the hottest thing right now.

But I guess, we just wanted to go our own way. So far it has been a challenge but I think we can make it. Also, the possibility of hotlinking from Flickr is always around the corner.

Thanks for an insightful post.

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/27 13:58
I just got that too Doug. So, I have gone ahead and loaed a photo to test my understanding of it.
This is what I did and it seems to work. It takes many clicks and takes a long time, but like good food, a good critique site should be worth waiting for.

Log in, click Gallery/My Gallery/Create new album

Click new (name your new album whatever you like - this is in your own gallery) then click apply modifications.
Click OK/Continue (this takes you back to the main gallery categories - Look at the categories and especially look carefully at the spelling of the Keywords for each category)

Go back to MY GALLERY and upload file/browse (get the photo - be sure the size is right)/click Continue.
Now, select your own album from the drop down menu, name your photo, description, and ADD KEYWORD from the main gallery (be sure the spelling is correct)
Click continue click ok
Woo hooo you did it!

The photo should now be in your gallery and in the main gallery category, and should appear on the most recent loaded.

Sorry, about that, it was late here and I forgot to actually publish the material. It should be fine now.

And a great tutorial, mmmee! You should add that as a comment to the article, I'd be happy.

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/27 17:32
Thanks Danial. I see its in "content". I see the "content" under my user menu. I click on the hotlink and see your easy to understand version of my long winded version.

I cannot find the add comment button to that article.. I assume that this is going to be the place where The Admins of the site record the FAQs and other things we may need to know, without adding anything from any of us beta testers. Although, I do see the other Articles have places for comments, but this is in Content. I think its good to have a place where just the Admins get to say what you have to say to us.

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/27 17:49
Sorry, I hadn't enabled the commenting on that category. This needs to be done manually every time a new category is added. Easy to forget

The idea is actually to have users submit content to those categories as well. For instance, your post here would've been a great submission. All posts would of course need to be moderated before publishing. But I think that would be the optimal work flow, don't you think?

I just need to get a good user/group access system up and running so I can add users into certain groups and give them extraordinary privileges in specific parts of the site.

You could be a moderator for the support sections. Would you like that?

With this system in place, much more content could be added and the organization would be become less centralized.

As soon as I get some time, I will post this suggestion to the To-do List so you'll be able to keep track of it's progress, and comment on it.

Re:Broken photo uploader 2007/06/27 18:37
That was fast! I see the FAQs (to be) and other items on the right side of the HOME page.

I think the discussions in these forums go a long way to let you know what any of us are having trouble with. A specific place for the support team to try to help is a good idea. This then separates the Help room from the forums by specifing the place where people should be able to get some answers.

I know very little about site design, but just click my way around to try find out how things work.

I realize you have limited time to spend here so certainly, I will try to answer questions about how to do things on the site. Thanks for the confidence you have shown in my abilities. I wonder if I need any special priviledges? I think if I am just the same as everyone else, I could just sit around the help room and answer any questions I can answer.

As time goes by and you get the site up and running the way you want it to run, I think you might need some real moderators and help people. Right now, I think anyone will help who is able to help. As you see which of us are able to fill different roles and help with various things, you will be able to determine who is good for whatever spot.

So, I will do the best I can to help with what ever I think I know something on.
